19 ARRESTED IN ESCALATING CATTLE THEFT IN BUNYORO

BUNYORO: 19 suspects have been arrested in connection with the escalating cattle theft in the Bunyoro sub region.
The suspects were arrested from the different districts of the Bunyoro sub region. Six of them were arrested from Masindi, four from Kibaale, three from Kagadi while the four were arrested from Kakumiro.
The Albertine region police spokesperson Allan Julius Hakiza blames that the escalating cattle theft in the region on the connivance between the herdsmen and the thieves.
Hakiza advised the local council leaders to always first ascertain the true ownership of the animals before issuing out the movement permits to the herdsmen who request for them in order to fight crime in the region.
The police officer revealed that in most cases the stolen animals are slaughtered and their meat transported in sucks and later delivered to the different points where it is sold.
Hakiza added that police is doing what is possible to end the vice in the region including mounting the check points on the roads and intensifying the police patrols.
He, however advised the farmers to quickly inform the police whenever they notice the disappearance of their animals to enable timely police intervention so that the criminals can be arrested.
