GULU: A total of 250 youth in Bardege-Layibi division, Gulu City, have been trained in urban farming to promote food production and curtail crime in the city.
The training was organized by the Mapenduzi Foundation, a community-based organization in Gulu City, with support funding from Martin Ojara Mapenduzi, the Bardege-Laiyibi area member of parliament.
These youths were selected from the annexed area of Gulu City, which still has sufficient land for practicing urban agriculture. The areas include Oitino, Kweyo Alokolum, and Paminano wards.
According to the Mapenduzi Foundation, the youth were trained in fisheries, poultry keeping, piggery, and kitchen farming.
The Hon. Martin Ojara Mapenduzi, MP for the Bardege Layibi constituency area, says he sponsored the training to help them utilize the sufficient land they have in Gulu City through agricultural best practices.
He added that the initiative will help the youth use their energy and skill to feed their communities as they will engage in food production hence curving criminality, promoting peace harmony and sanity in the society
The politician assured the community where these trained youth were selected that they (the trained youth) will also serve as agricultural extension workers due to the knowledge and skills they have now acquired.
Mapenduzi told UGReports that he has already acquired four hand tractors through a partnership with the mechanization unit of the ministry of agriculture, and he is expected to deliver the tractors this week to the youthful beneficiaries.
According to Mapenduzi, each tractor has the capacity to till at least four acres of land daily.
