ARUA: Police in Arua City have arraigned a man who was arrested with government drugs in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in court.

Mr. Omika Titus, 40, a boda-boda cyclist and a resident of Arua Public Cell, Bazaar Ward, Central Division in Arua City, was produced to court on Wednesday.

The suspect was arrested on April 17, 2023, by the DRC Police while transporting drugs that belonged to the government of Uganda.

On May 5, 2023, DRC police handed over the suspect to Ugandan authorities at the Odramachaku border in Ayivu West Division, Arua City, and he was received by the Incharge of Odramachaku Police Post.

The West Nile Region Police Spokesperson, Josephine Angucia, said that immediately after being handed over to Uganda Police at the border, a case of smuggling government drugs was opened up and was investigated under Ayivu West Division CRB 064/2023.

‘’One box containing an assortment of drugs was recovered from him with the mark of the Government of Uganda and exhibited,’’ she said.

The regional police spokesperson said that investigations were carried out, a case file was compiled, and it was forwarded to the State Attorney Arua for legal advice.

‘’The file was then sanctioned, and the suspect was produced before Arua Court on June 14, 2023, to answer the charge of smuggling government drugs,’’ she added.

Angucia noted that West Nile being a region that borders both the DRC and South Sudan, with many porous borderlines, cases of smuggling government drugs across the border have been occasionally registered.

She therefore urged people not to smuggle government drugs across the border to neighboring countries, as the practice is not only illegal but also denies citizens their right to get essential drugs from government health facilities.
