ARUA: Paul Wamala the theatre assistant at Arua Regional Referral Hospital has been arrested on the allegations of extorting money from patients.

Wamala who has been on run was arrested on Wednesday when he had reported back for work and he is detained at Arua Central Police Station. Case file opened under CRB513/2022.

On 30th May 2022, Paul Wamala was accused of extorting over 200,000 Uganda shillings from Bashir Onia who had taken his 2 year-old son Nabil Aron for treatment at the hospital.

Nabil Aron who later passed on had stomach obstruction and needed an operation, but the Nurse on duty Paul Wamala demanded for 210,000 shillings to buy drugs before the procedure could be performed.

The Family of the deceased, led by Adiru Emily later stormed the office of the hospital director for their money.

The child was referred to Arua Regional Referral Hospital from a clinic in Nsambya.

Josephine Angucia the Westnile Regional Police Spokesperson told ugreports on Friday afternoon that Wamala was arrested on accounts of receiving bribe and abuse of office.

According to the police mouthpiece, investigations establish that Wamala truly received the money from relatives of the patient allegedly for buying drugs which were not bought.

‘’Later Wamala decided to refund the money to the deceased relatives after sensing danger. It was also established that the operation of the patient delayed and later died,’’ she disclosed.
