BULIISA FISHERMEN CAUTIONED AGAINST ILLEGAL FISHING

By Pascal Onega

BULIISA: The fishing communities in Buliisa district Bunyoro subregion have been cautioned against illegal fishing practices and embrace legal fishing gears.

Speaking to ugreports on Friday in a special interview, Executive director Uganda Fisheries and Fish Conservation Association [UFFCA] Seremosi Kamuturaki said that illegal fishing practices depletes fish species in the water body.

UFFCA is an organization that was founded in 1994 with the head office in Kampala and regional office in Buliisa district headquarters aimed at combating illegal fishing practices and protecting the fish resources that were under threat of depletion.

Kumuturaki says fishermen should also be responsible in protecting the fish resources by ensuring that they use the rightful gears.

”Fishermen should also be responsible in protecting the fish resources by ensuring that they use the rightful gears, this will help to protect the fish species from being depleted,” said Kumuturaki.

In 2017, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni directed the deployment of Uganda Peoples Defense Forces {UPDF} soldiers to all the landing sites in the country to combat illegal fishing practices and protect the fish resources that were under threat of depletion and dwindled fish stock in the country.

The operations have since aided the destruction of illegal fishing gear including boats, hooks, fishing nets, immature fish, and several sets of mono-filament nets.
