BULIISA LCV CHAIRPERSON WANTS FISHERIES MINISTRY TO BAN LIGHT FISHING IN UGANDA

By Pascal Onega

BULIISA: Buliisa District Chairperson Fred Lukumu has asked the ministry of fisheries to ban   fishing with bright lights on all Lakes including Albert that he says is too dangerous and destructive.

Lukumu made the call during a meeting with director of fisheries, the state minister of fisheries and fishermen on Lake Albert in Kajjansi, Kampala recently.

The chairperson reasoned that since the fishing ministry has allowed the use of 3 inch gill nets in catching fish, it should ban the use of bright lights in catching especially the sliver fish that he said attracts a lot of fish that is leading to depletion of the lake by catching all the fish around.

Last month several fishermen from Buliisa district petitioned the government to undertake quick interventions to curb bad fishing methods on lake Albert citing the use of bright lights in the catching of silver fish.

Responding to Lukumu`s concerns, the fisheries director Joyce Okurut Nyeko revealed that several researches have been conducted to evaluate the impacts of the fishing method.

Nyeko promised that by July 2023 they will have come up with a conclusive solution to the matter.
