Buliisa: The authorities in Biiso, sub-county Buliisa District, condemn the brutal arrests of community members by the National Forest Authority enforcement team.
This was sounded by several local leaders recently during a consultative meeting held at Biiso community hall, convened by NFA officials, leaders, and community members neighboring Budongo Forest.
Denis Oyewa, the LC3 Chairperson, Biiso Sub County, noted that security officials attached to the National Forest Authority (NFA) have been arresting some community members heartlessly without the consent of village chairpersons and even taking them to unknown detention places.
He condemned the act saying if any arrest is being made, the village chairpersons should be involved.
Vincent Mukonyezi, the Buliisa district deputy council speaker cum district councilor representing Biiso Sub County disclosed that, several community members have been injured due to the brutal arrest saying the enforcement approach is improper.
Mukonyezi cited an example where a man in Busingiro village was found roofing his house with timbers, noting that the approach that the officials used scared him and he ended up falling.
The district council deputy speaker called for an organized enforcement team using local councils and other elective structures.
Responding to the concerns of the leaders, Leo Twinomuhangi, the coordinator for policy and planning at NFA, said they have received several complaints and promised that the local leaders will be involved if any arrests are made.
