HOIMA: Hoima Catholic Diocese is hunting for 40 billion shillings for the construction of children and women’s specialized hospital in Hoima City.

Addressing the media on Monday at the Hoima Catholic Diocese headquarters, Fr. Jude Ssemambo the Project Publicity Committee Chairperson disclosed that though the hospital will be specializing in treatment of children and women, men will also be attended.

The Christian leader further said that the project intends to serve all people within and outside Bunyoro.

The Hoima Catholic Diocese Chancellor Rev. Fr. Dominic Ndugwa called upon people to support the project by donating the little they have noting that they can achieve the goal within the shortest time.

The General Project Coordinator Fr. Davis Mugisa Musiime explained Hoima Catholic Diocese has chosen to upgrade Bujumbura Health Centre III into a Specialized Children and Women’s Hospital to help mitigate the Maternal and Childhood health challenges that Bunyoro Region is facing.

He also asserted that the hospital will be 272 bed capacity adding that the 40 billion shillings caters for both construction and procurement of the hospital’s medical equipment.

The fundraising for the construction of the St. Mary’s Women and Children’s Specialized Hospital will be launched on 25th June 2025 at Hoima Catholic Diocese Headquarters and President Museveni Yoweri Kaguta is expected to be the chief guest.

According to the plan, the hospital will be constructed in Bujumbura along Rwenkobe road in Hoima West Division Hoima City. The seven years project is expected to be completed within five years.

Recent National Survey

The recent national survey indicates that Bunyoro region posted the lowest {44.5%} proportion of mothers attending 4plus ANC visits at Facilities {National Average 60%, UDHS, 2016} increasing the risk of complicated childbirths, and neonatal deaths.

Bunyoro sub-region has the 3rd highest infant mortality rate and has 2rd highest child stunting rate in the country {12.5%}.

According to Fr. Davis Mugisa Musiime the General Project Coordinator, a Specialized Children and Women’s Hospital in the region will therefore significantly offer appropriate quality paediatric and maternal services that are accessible and affordable and effectively utilized by all, including privileged.

The project brief

The hospital has been designed to run as a specialized hospital catering for the needs of Children and Women. It will in addition have facilities to cater for general health and medical needs of the general public including men.

It will be located adjacent to the current Bujumbura Health Centre III, along Rwenkobe road in Hoima West Division Hoima City.

The hospital facilities

A number of facilities have been proposed and incorporated in the design of the hospital including Paediatric Wing, Antenatal, Gynaecology Wing, Operating theatres, ICU/HDU, Emergency, Radiology, Laboratories, AIDS clinic, Maternity wards, Surgical wards, Private rooms on every ward, Administration, offices, conference rooms, Cafeteria and Chaplaincy.

The hospital initial phase will have a bed capacity of 182 beds. At the end of the development however, the hospital is envisaged to have a bed capacity of 272 general and 46 private beds.
