FORMULATE POLICIES ON E-WASTE MANAGEMENT- PM NABBANJA

KAMPALA: Uganda’s Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has cautioned higher institutions of learning in Uganda to formulate policies to tackle the issues of electrical or electronic waste (E-waste).

The Prime Minister’s guidance was read in her speech by Ketty Lamaro, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Sports, who represented the premier on Sunday, August 20, 2023, during the National Council for Higher Education’s 20th Anniversary Run from Kampala.

“Plan for e-waste, do research on e-waste, but also don’t forget to ensure that you plant trees in your institutions as part of environmental conservation”. Lamaro reads the PM’s speech.

The Permanent Secretary, on behalf of the Ministry of Education and Sports, thanked the National Council for Higher Education for organizing the event while prioritizing the environment as the central theme of the run, which started at 6:30 a.m. with serious aerobic exercises.

“This is a good meet-up, and at the Ministry of Education and Sports, we are very happy about this turn-up, and you have our support as an educational institution”. Lamaro cheered the crowd.

Meanwhile, Prof.Mary Okwakol, the Executive Director of the Uganda National Council for Higher Education, said that the higher institutions of learning in Uganda produce e-waste and should indeed have a clear e-waste management policy to support protecting the environment.

The run with the theme Environmental Conservation in Higher Education Institutions attracted over 50 higher education institutions, including universities and other degree- and diploma-awarding institutions of learning.

NCHE gave tree seedlings to at least all institutions and individuals who participated in the run to mark their 20 years of existence.
