BUKEDEA: Police in Bukedea district have in custody four suspects on allegations of conducting an abortion on a 16-year-old pupil attached to Bukedea Demonstration Primary School.

The quadruple were identified as John Bosco Otim, the Ebenezer clinic proprietor; Stephen Muron, the facility nurse; Denis Ocen, the defiler; and one only identified as Imalingat, the brother of the defiler.

On April 30, 2023, at around 4:15 p.m., Ms. Akia Sarah, the mother of the victim, reported the disappearance of her daughter, and a vigorous search was carried out, only to find her at Ebenezer Health Center.

At the health center, the girl claimed she was sick and that her boyfriend, identified as Denis Ocen, had given her four tablets to swallow.

Ms. Akia told www.ugreports.com that the daughter was rushed to Mission Health Center, which further referred them to Bukedea Health Center IV.

The East Kyoga Police Spokesperson, Oscar Girigory Ageca, told journalists on May 9, 2023, that the suspects were arrested and are detained at Bukedea Central Police Station.

‘’I want to confirm that we have them in our cells and that the police are hunting for more suspects,” Mr. Ageca said.

The regional police spokesperson added that the victim was taken back to Ebenezer Health Center, where the fetus came out, and it was handed over to the parties above for interment.

Mr. Ageca also said that the inquiry also led to the discovery that at the health facility, the victim was attended to by a nursing officer without the guidance of a medical officer, and that facility was operating with an expired license.

The police officer further said that the suspects may also incur additional charges of operating a health facility without a license and procuring an abortion contrary to the law of Uganda upon the requisite legal guidance from the Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.
