GILU: The Member of Parliament for Aswa constituency in Gulu district, Wokorach Simon Peter on Thursday launched iron sheet distribution targeting National Resistance Movement (NRM) sub-county leaders and Gombolola Internal Security Officers (GISOs) of the 11 sub-counties in Gulu District.
While launching the distribution of the iron sheets at Pukong Sub County, Wokorach said this initiative is part of NRM Vision 2040, which is geared toward improving the standard of living of the people.
‘’The initiative is part of NRM Vision 2040, which is geared toward improving the standard of living of the people,’’ he said.
He noted that it’s unrealistic for leaders to encourage their people to shift from grass-thatched houses into permanent houses if the leaders are not living by example.
According to Wokorach, this pilot project focuses on empowering the leaders and will run from August 2022 until December of this year, when the 22 selected beneficiaries will be supported with 10 pieces of iron sheets.
Under the project, a total of 220 pieces of iron sheet worth 8,360,000 shillings will be distributed. On Thursday, he distributed 40 pieces of iron sheets to four beneficiaries, who each received ten pieces of iron sheets.
Those who received were Bismarck Rubangakene GISO of Awach sub county and Otoo Omona Felix GISO of Pukony. Other beneficiaries were Toodera Bosco, the NRM chairperson of Omel sub county, and Sunday Willy Moses, the NRM chairperson of Bungatira sub county.
James Ocen, the Gulu district NRM chairperson, however, warned the beneficiaries to desist from the vice of selling their iron sheet and to use it for its right purpose. He also advised them not to be discouraged by critics who are prone to utterances.
Otoo Omon Felix, one of the beneficiaries, says the initiative would empower them to establish the good house, noticing that some of the young GISO in Gulu district still live in a hut that is prone to attack by their enemies.
Meanwhile, Sunday Willy Moses, the NRM chairperson of Bungatira Sub County, reveals that in 2021, his young daughter survived being burned in the grass Thatch house, which caught fire as a result of a wildfire.
He, however, commits that he is going to use the iron sheet to build his home.
