KAKUMIRO: The stakeholders including health workers from Kakumiro district stakeholders have been skilled as part of the efforts towards eliminating cervical cancer in the country.
This was during a one-day workshop that was organised by the Uganda Rural Development Training Program-URDT, a Nongovernmental organisation at Barakah hotel in Kakumiro town council on Wednesday.
URDT is currently implementing a three-year project on cervical cancer screening and treatment in five sub-counties in Kakumiro district including Katikara, Mpasaana, Kisengwe, Birembo, and Kitaihuka.
According to Shamim Namagembe, the project manager, the project is aimed at creating awareness on cervical cancer prevention control, treating and further training the health workers and VHTs from the district on the same.
Namagembe revealed that the project was necessitated by the low turn-up of women for cervical cancer screening and the abrupt transfer of the health workers which hinder the efforts of fighting the disease in the district.
She called upon the communities to cooperate with the organisation so that cervical cancer can be eliminated.
The district assistant CAO, John Saali Sekitoleko applauded URDT for complimenting the government efforts in fighting the disease in the district and he asked it to continue with the initiative in order to increase the community’s awareness about the disease.
Sekitoleko also challenged the women to embrace the routine cervical cancer screening in order to save the lives that are taken by the disease.
Meanwhile, the district health educator Robert Senteza promised continued support towards URDT’s efforts through the mobilisation of the communities.
