KITGUM EMERGES ATHLETICS CHAMPIONS OF USSSA ACHOLI ZONE

ACHOLI: Kitgum district was over the weekend announced champion of the 1st edition of the Uganda Secondary School Athletics Championship 2023, which commenced on Thursday, June 28, with 7 districts in the Acholi subregion participating except Nwoya district, which failed to participate due to a financial crisis.
Kitgum was the overall champion with a total of 339 points, Gulu was second with 329 points, Lamwo was third with 178 points, Amuru district came in fourth with 172, followed by Agago district in the fifth position with 117, Pader district came in sixth with 98 points, and Omoro appeared last with 64 points.
Meanwhile, the overall best secondary school categories were awarded to St. Joseph College Layibi among the boy’s categories after earning 54 points for Gulu district, while Sacred Heart Secondary School emerged as the best among the girl’s categories after earning a total of 64 points for Gulu district.
In the rugby game, Sir Samuel Baker Secondary School was the champion, beating Kitgum Comprehensive College Main Campus 36 points to nil, while the Kitgum Comprehensive College Main Campus girls’ team automatically qualified after no school showed up to face them.
However, in the Dance sport competition, the boy’s categories were won by St. Teresa of Calcutta Omoro, while Sacred Heart also won in the girl’s categories.
Okot P’ Bitek, Chairperson of the Uganda Secondary School Sport Association Acholi Region, says the selected athletes are expected to report to the training camp on Tuesday, July 4, adding that the coaches have already been identified.
The 2023 secondary school athletic championship national competition is scheduled for July 8–19, 2023, and will be hosted by Kabale City.
