MAKERERE UNIVERSITY SUSPENDS STUDENTS GUILD ELECTIONS

KAMPALA: Makerere University Council has indefinitely suspended the ongoing students Guild leadership elections till further notice.

According to a letter dated July 14th 2022, signed by the Chairperson of Makerere University Council Mrs Lorna Magara, the student’s guild election has been suspended following the violence that broke out at the University.

Ms Magara noted in the letter addressed to the Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe that the violence has since led to loss of life at the University.

The dead has been identified as Betungura Buwaate a student of Uganda Christian University who was stabbed to death in a scuffle between rival students.

The University Council Chairperson noted that Section 42 of Makerere University Council Charter 2009, gives the council Chairperson powers to take action in extraordinary circumstances.

Ms Magara said that Makerere University Council will hold an emergency meeting Friday July 15th to consider further action to address student’s indiscipline.
