MAN FAKES OWN KIDNAP, DEMANDS SHS 7M RANSOM FROM RELATIVES

 MASINDI: Police in Masindi district have in custody a 20-year-old man on allegations of faking own kidnap and demanding seven million shillings ransom from relatives.

Byaruhanga Tumwesige, a resident of Kihaara Village in Bwijanga Sub county Bujenje County in Masindi district went missing on 13th January 2023.

Mr. Tumusiime Alex, an elder of Byaruhanga told this publication that after his disappearance, they reported the case at Masindi Central Police Station.

Tumusiime said they have been receiving threatening messages from their brother’s number, but when they call on it, no one would respond.

‘’He was demanding a ransom between 7 to 10 million. They said we would get his dead body in the rain forest if we don’t send the money,’’ Tumusiime narrated.

The Albertine Region Police Spokesperson Julius Allan Hakiza said Police Flying Squad Unit launched an operation of tracking Byaruhanga’s phone

He added that police monitored Byaruhanga’s suspected kidnappers’ movements and signals indicated that he was shifting from Bujenje in Masindi and Hoima City.

The police mouthpiece asserted that the signals later indicated that Byaruhanga was in a trade show at Hoima Booma Grounds where police finally arrested him.

Hakiza added that police are yet to prefer charges against the suspect who is being held at Masindi Central Police Station for interrogation.
