MASINDI: Police in Masindi district are holding a lady in her mid 20’s on allegations of distributing counterfeit money in Kijura Trading Centre, Central Division Masindi Municipality in Masindi District.
The Albertine Region Police Spokesperson Julius Allan Hakiza has identified the suspect as Fosca Orodriyo.
Hakiza told UGReports Tuesday evening that the suspect was arrested on Sunday in Kijura trading centre when she tried to defraud a mobile money agent counterfeit notes worth 9,500,000 shillings.
”She recorded a statement, and she is detained at Masindi Central Police Station and has been charged with obtaining money by false pretence,” he asserted.
It’s alleged that Orodriyo pressured the mobile money attendant to deposit money on her account claiming that she was in a hurry, and lucky enough, she noticed that the 50,000 shilling notes were counterfeit.
It’s reported that the suspect has been also an attendant at one of the mobile money outlets in Masindi town, and it’s alleged that she escaped with 900,000 shillings belonging to her boss.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the lady had already distributed several counterfeit notes by the time she was arrested.
According to police, there has been an increase in the number of counterfeit money cases reported in Masindi town, with three cases reported in the last few weeks.
Meanwhile, Hakiza has appealed to the public to be vigilant enough against such fraudsters and partner with police through sharing information that may lead to the arrest of the criminals.
In September this year, two men alleged to be mobile money fraudsters were beaten to coma by an angry mob in Masindi for allegedly defrauding 1.5 million shillings from a mobile money operator in Kijura Trading Centre.
The suspects were later rescued by police and admitted at Masindi District General Hospital.
