Nebbi: Police in Nebbi are investigating an incident where a suspected rabbit thief was killed by an angry mob.

The gruesome incident happened on Thursday at around 3:27 a.m. in Opano Cell, Central Division, Nebbi Municipality, Nebbi district.

The West Nile Region Police Spokesperson Josephine Angucia told this publication that it’s alleged that on the fateful day at dawn, unidentified members of a mob beat up an unknown person on suspicion that he had stolen a rabbit.

She said that upon receiving the information, police rushed to the scene only to find the person dead, and no other person was found at the scene of the murder.

‘’We examined and documented the scene and conveyed the body to the Nebbi General Hospital mortuary for identification and a postmortem,’’ Angucia said.

The regional police mouthpiece added that a statement was recorded from the complainant and inquiries have commenced under Nebbi CRB 207/2023.

She urged the general public to desist from mob action and respect the right to life under all conditions, as the punishment given by mobs for stealing a rabbit is not proportionate to the gravity of the alleged offense.

‘’They should handover such suspects to the police for proper investigations and appropriate punishment by courts of law,’’ she further urged.
