NEBBI: The territorial police of Nebbi has today {Tuesday} arrested a highway criminal for stealing goods from moving trucks. The suspect has been identified as Oyirwoth Navia.

Angucia Josephine, the West Nile Region Police Spokesperson says they also recovered the items stolen from the trucks in the Nyaravur area along Pakwach – Nebbi road.

This followed information from a local leader that the youths who rob vehicles in transit had returned to the area and had resumed the vice.

Angucia asserts that in response the Officer in charge of Nyaravur police post in Nebbi district and the team went on patrol in a bid to secure the highway.

‘’While on duty on Monday at around 4:00 am, the officers encountered three men on top of a moving fuel tanker dropping down items,’’ she said.

The police mouthpiece adds that they pursued the truck and ordered the suspects to come down. ‘’Unfortunately, two of the suspects escaped, but one was arrested after came down from the truck and confronted the police officers with knives,’’ she added.

Angucia also said that in the process, a police officer fired a bullet in the air to warn the suspect but he continued to attack the officers, this prompted the officer to shoot the suspect in the leg to disarm him.

The suspect was then arrested and taken to Nebbi General Hospital for treatment.

‘’We recovered a sack of chicken feed, 5 cartons of mineral water and 5 empty jerricans at the scene,’’ she said.

The driver of the fuel tanker which was heading to Congo did not stop as he could not have realized what was happening. The search for the other two suspects on the run is ongoing.

The police officer says they also recovered items exhibited as inquiries continue into the matter under Nyaravur Police Post SD reference 05/26/09/2022.
