NTUNGAMO COFFEE FARMERS TO PETITION MAAIF OVER  SHODDY WORK

By Van Deguras

NTUNGAMO: Coffee farmers in Ntungamo district under their umbrella “Ntungamo district coffee farmers cooperative Union” have resolved to petition the  Minister of Agriculture Animal Industry And Fisheries (MAAIF) Hon. Frank Tumwebaze to intervene in the matters of their union.

In their petition chaired by Musika Norman, they are accusing the contractor Benson Tayebwa the Director of Bernner Technical Services for having done shoddy work while installing the electricity supply to their factory.

They are also accusing the contractor of purchasing second hand Machines of coffee huller and coffee grinding machines for the cooperative.

The angry union delegates and their chairpersons from the whole district totaling to 214  representing 25,000 members want Tayebwa to refund their money 46,965,939 million shillings which they deposited because he didn’t deliver quality service.

Tayebwa is said to have got and signed the contract at shillings 62,621,252= and he’s now demanding a balance of shillings 15,655,313=.

The coffee farmers also blamed the district leadership for not helping them to summon the contractor and refund their money.

The farmers’ crisis meeting was held at their Union’s headquarters at Kahunga trading centre in Ntungamo sub county – Ruhaama county where the Ntungamo district deputy RDC Robert Kamuntu was the guest of honour.

He was also accompanied by area district Councillor Naboth Mpirirwe and  Wycliffe Twinamatsiko the Union board member and district Councillor representing Kagarama town council.

The deputy RDC Kamuntu disclosed that his office is going to investigate the matters between the contractor and the union members.

The union members however vowed to demonstrate if the  government does not listen to them and solve their problem.

Efforts to get Contractor Benson Tayebwa for a comment proved fruitless as he could not pick our repeated phone calls.

Recently, the world bank through the Ministry of Agriculture Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) donated Sh. 224M= to Ntungamo Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (NCFCU) to purchase a coffee huller and coffee grinding machines and also to connect electricity of 3Phase to their factory, and all these were done poorly by that fake contractor from  Bernner Technical Services limited.
