GULU: The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) have disclosed that they have disconnected water supply from the administrative block of Gulu district local government due to failure to pay a total of 3 million shillings of their water bill.

Ivan Tekakwo, the northern regional spokesperson for the NWSC, says disconnecting water from the Gulu district administrative block came following a directive from their executive manager, who ordered all the regional managers to disconnect water supply from any defaulters.

Samuel Lagu, the deputy chief administrative officer of Gulu district, confirmed the disconnection of their water, saying it is affecting the operation in the district since staff are now trekking distances to ease themselves.

Lagu told our reporter that the district’s delay in paying their water bill is due to technical challenges in their payment system. He disclosed, however, that they have managed to clear a total of 1.9 million shillings and are now left with a deficit of 1.5 million shillings.

‘’The district authorities are in talks with the National Water and Sewerage Corporation to reconnect the facilities,’’ he revealed.

Meanwhile, one of the staff members who spoke to our reporter on the condition of anonymity said that they are now easing themselves into hotel facilities such as the Bomah Hotel, Churchill Court, IMC Medical Centre, and Inspire Africa Coffee Malt.

He further revealed that sometimes hosting visitors has become a challenge because, when nature calls, they have nowhere to go.

In June, the corporation told this publication that majorities of government entities, including the Uganda Police Force, Uganda Prison Commission, Ministry of Defense, Gulu Regional Referral Hospital, Gulu district local government, and Gulu Main Market, have defaulted on paying water bills.

Due to non-payment of the water bill, the corporation says they have halted the extension of the water pipeline to other annexed parts of Gulu city, adding that their operation vehicles are no longer in operation and are packed at regional offices.
