PARENTS CHALLENGED TO SUPPORT THEIR CHILDREN IN SPORTS

By Our Reporter

MASINDI: The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) Bunyoro Delegate, Mr. Byamukama Rogers, has challenged parents to encourage their children in sports activities.

Mr. Byamukama was speaking as the chief guest at the closure of the 2023 edition of the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) games for Masindi district.

At the same function, Kabalega Secondary School and St. Theresa Girls Secondary School, Nyamigisa, were crowned the district champions of the boys and girls USSSA football games, respectively, while Masindi Army Secondary School was crowned the champions of netball.

The Bunyoro FUFA Delegate challenged parents to support their children in academics alongside sports, saying that many people have achieved in the sports industry, but it has remained largely untapped in Uganda.

‘’It’s no longer like the past when people would target for jobs after education; things have changed; sports is selling like hotcakes but it hasn’t been tapped into,’’ he said.

On the same note, Byamukama said that the sports industry has better pay compared to some white-collar jobs, something he said parents and guardians should have as a mindset change and support their children in sports activities.

He pledged to donate jerseys and a pair of balls to schools that went through finals before regional games kick off mid-month.

‘’Since most players are at an advanced level, I will bring spotters and professional coaches from universities and colleges who will spot and select players who can have bursaries in their institutions. We don’t want their talent to vanish,’’ Byamukama said.

The Bunyoro FUFA Delegate also pledged to organize training for sports masters from different schools in Masindi district in order to boost sports in the district and instill discipline in them and the students.

Byamukama, however, commended the organizers of this year’s district USSSA games for the discipline exhibited during the tournament.
