BUKEDEA: The administrators of Soroti catholic Diocese in Soroti district are in preparations to upgrade St. Mary’s Primary Teachers College in Bukedea district into a nursing school.

This comes out as the government phased out the Grade III, V teaching qualifications in favour of a bachelor’s degree in Education.

There are 46 PTCs in Uganda, 23 of which are core institutions that run both pre-and in-service programs. The remaining 23 are non-core institutions that only offer pre-service programs.

Right Rev Dr Bishop Joseph Eciru Oliach, of Soroti catholic dioceses says St. Mary’s being one of the affected primary teaching college, the catholic fraternity could not vandalize or abandon the structures instead they have come up with an idea of upgrading in to the nursing school.

‘’When the government phased out the PTC’s, St. Mary’s was as well affected, so as the administrators, we are looking towards upgrading it to the nursing school so that we still help the community’’, said Bishop Oliach.

Rev. Fr.Dr.Jerome Agule, the Diocesean health coordinator says the upgrade of St. Mary’s primary teachers college would now seek advantageous to the community whereby the Bukedea mission health center III would be also upgraded into a hospital.
