MASINDI: Police in Masindi district are holding Immaculate Ayebale 23, on allegations of dumping her 2-months-old baby under a mango tree in Kilanyi Village Pakanyi Sub County Buruli Constituency Masindi district.

The innocent baby was discovered last Sunday by a Good Samaritan who handed it over to Masindi Central Police Station before it was evacuated to Gate-way baby’s home in Kiryandongo district.

Following the police intervention, the suspect was arrested today {Tuesday} from her aunt’s residence in Kihuuba Cell Karujubu division Masindi municipality.

According to an eyewitness who preferred anonymity, the baby’s parents who are residents of Nyangahya division developed a family misunderstanding on Saturday which later resulted into a fight.

‘’In the process of fighting, Ayebale was told by the mother in law to leave, which was also seconded by the husband. She was also forced to leave the baby behind,’’ a neighbour told police.

He also told the police that the baby spent the entire night crying which prompted its father to search for the mother on Sunday.

‘’He came back around noonday without a baby, I didn’t know where it was,’’ he explained.

In her statement, Ayebale refuted the claims that she dumped her baby saying that it was in the hands of its father before the regrettable incident happened.

‘’I requested to leave with my baby, but they refused, this prompted me to take a refugee at my aunt’s residence in Kihuuba cell, I can’t dump my own baby,’’ she said.

Contrary to Ayebale’s statement, Mariam Nyabutaraga, the suspect’s mother-in-law, claims that the baby was handed over to the suspect’s relatives.

‘’On Sunday, my son took the child to its relatives, and it was handed over to them, he didn’t dump it under the tree,’’ she insisted.

Julius Allan Hakiza, Albertine Region Police Spokesperson confirmed the arrest and said the suspect is detained at Masindi Central Police Station.
