MASINDI: The Masindi Grade One Magistrate Court presided over by grade one magistrate Selsa Biwaga on Monday slapped murder charges against Simon Okou 38, a private security guard attached to Blue Whale Security Company Ltd.
Ekou was also remanded to Masindi Government Prisons for forty days for allegedly shooting and killing Gerald Aseera, the former news anchor at Kings FM 93.6 Masindi.
It’s alleged that on 1st June 2022 at around 00:30am Ekou Simon who was manning the Coca-Cola depot Masindi branch shot Gerald Aseera dead suspecting him to be a thief.
Ekou was denied an opportunity to defend himself since the grade one magistrate court is not mandated to handle capital offences.
While addressing journalists after the court session, Jessica Kabakuru, the mother of late Aseera Gerald, asked court to speed up the trial of the suspect who killed his son for justice.
Gerald Aseera was a journalist attached to Kings FM 96.3 Masindi, he was shot in the chest on Wednesday 1st June 2022 on allegations of theft of four cartons of soda at the Coca-Cola depot Masindi branch.
According to ASP Julius Allan Hakiza, the Albertine Region Police Spokesperson, the incident happened at around 00:30am.
The journalist died moments after being rushed to Masindi General Hospital.
According to Rashida Tooti, an eyewitness at the hospital, the deceased was dumped near the children’s ward by unknown people at around 1am, and they suspected him to be a thief.
‘’He was dumped near the children’s ward, and I suspected him to be a thief, but I was shocked this morning to hear that he works with Kings FM,’’ she said on 1st June 2022.
According to police, the matter was reported at Masindi CPS by Chemengu Adam, a police officer attached to the same police station.
Scene of the crime was visited by the deputy CID and the team, rifle number UG. PSO21008209637 and three rounds of ammunition recovered from the suspect and exhibited.
The burial of Aseera
Gerald Aseera was buried amidst tears on 3rd June 2022 at his ancestral home in Pakanyi Village Pakanyi Sub County Buruli County in Masindi district.
While addressing the mourners, Mr. Isingoma Peter the father of late Aseera rejected the police statement that his son was shot over the theft of four cartons of soda.
‘’My son wasn’t a thief, I groomed him, he was a hardworking man who sweated to bring food on the table for his four children,’’ Isingoma told mourners.
It’s not yet clear why the prominent news anchor was gunned down, ugreports will keep you updated on any development.
