OMORO: Police were on Monday afternoon forced to fire live bullets to disperse dozens of residents of Te-Store village in Omoro town council, Omoro district who were scrambling for free beers after a truck veered off the road and overturned in the area.
The truck, registration number UAU 496V and loaded with several crates of beer, lost control and overturned after hitting humps due to speeding. Three of the occupants of the ill-fated truck sustained injuries and were rushed to St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor.
Oyet Stephen Sunday, the area local council chairperson, says police were left with no option but to fire live bullets to control the community from looting the beers.
Hassan Katumba Mugerirwa, the district police commander confirmed the accident, adding that nobody was injured in the gunfire incident.
According to the police crime report 2021, Aswa River region registered a total of 628 cases of road crashes with 173 fatalities, 330 serious and 125 minor crashes.
