MASINDI: John Eleku was fatally shot dead after allegedly resisting arrest and trying to disarm police officers.
The incident happened on Thursday evening at around 5pm in Bisaju village in Kasenene Parish, Nyantozi sub-county, Masindi District.
The Albertine Region Spokesperson, Julius Allan Hakiza, said the deceased was a suspected thief who had charges of robbery with a case file dated August 27, 2023, at Kigorobya police in Hoima district, where he had committed the crime before running to hide in Masindi.
Hakiza explained that an officer attached to Kigorobya police detective Shadrac Mpabaisi went to conduct the arrest of John Elaku, who is now deceased, along with the complainant Patrick Ndyanabo.
He said that the deceased resisted arrest, grabbed the officer’s gun, and wanted to shoot at them, but the complainant and the officer managed to remove the gun and shoot him in self-defense.
Hakiza added that they have arrested the detective to aid them in their investigations.
Hakiza warned the public to halt the tendency to grab guns from security personnel and attack them while on duty.
