ARUA: Police in Arua Central Police station have arrested and detained three radiology staff Mr. Abila Billington, Alex Okello and Benard Olul over an alleged theft of X – ray machine components.
Mr. Hillary Onziga, the in charge T.B ward and X – Ray machine at Arua Regional Referral Hospital disclosed that on 07th. 02.2022, he reported the case of the missing items at Arua Central Police Station under Arua CPS/CRB 153/2022.
He further noted that these items which included a HP Laptop Silver in color and a Samsung Galaxy tab phone were missing when he reported to the hospital store ready to sign the above items to proceed to normal duty.
Onziga however disclosed that he made a follow up with the concerned officer, Mr. Abila Billington who failed to account for the whereabouts of these equipment.
The West Nile Police Spokesperson, SP Angucia Josephine confirmed the arrest and noted that police from Arua Central Police Station opened the case file, visited the scene, documented it and recorded statements from relevant witnesses.
She further noted that police have recovered the exhibits and detained the suspects as investigation continues into the matter.
Angucia disclosed that the police investigations have revealed that the HP laptop and the Samsung Galaxy tablet which were part of the X – ray machine components at the hospital were taken by Mr. Abila to Furaha Link Ventures LTD, Arua branch as security for a loan of UGX 1.2 Million.
She added that upon sanctioning of the case file, the suspects will be forwarded to court for trials as investigations still continue into the matter.
The police spokesperson noted that there is laxity and poor record management on movements in and out as well as laxity in stores management and therefore police have advised the hospital management to improve on proper record keeping on the movement of hospital equipment in and out as well as regular supervision at the main stores by hospital administration.
Dr. Filbert Nyeko, the Director Arua Regional Referral Hospital revealed that these staff are under detention at Arua Central Police Station and after they are found guilty, they will face the law.
“We don’t tolerate thieves in our work place, and no room for thieves, they will pay for the theft if found guilty,” added Dr. Nyeko.
He further added that it is very shameful for a staff member to take hospital equipment as loan security of only UGX 1.2 Million shillings.
In March 2021, police arrested three security guards of Arua Regional Referral Hospital over alleged theft of hospital Ambulance UG 6821M and in the same year the Minister of Health, Dr. Ruth Aceng warned Arua hospital staff against stealing items from the Outpatients Department – OPD.
