ARUA: Police in Arua City have rescued a bodaboda rider from an irate mob at the Democratic Republic of the Congo border and arrested two suspected motorcycle robbers.

The suspects have been identified as Abdul Rahman Mustafa of Obolokofuku cell and Ali Bruhan of Kirabu cell, all in Arua City Central Division.

They were arrested in a security operation. Police also recovered several suspected stolen items, including South Sudan number plates, which are all displayed.

The West Nile Region Police Spokesperson, Josephine Angucia, says that the arrests and recoveries were made in an operation that followed the incident on August 9, 2023, at around 8:15 a.m., which started at the Lia border and extended towards Arua City Central Division.

Angucia explains that the rescued bodaboda rider, Waiga Muzamil, was from Lobidra stage in Arua City Central Division and had transported a customer from Arua City Center to Lia borderline with DR Congo. As he was handing over the customer to his counterparts in DR Congo, he was attacked by the said mob, assaulted, and his motorcycle was taken away from him by the mob.

The regional police mouthpiece said he was, however, rescued by Lia border post police, who later teamed up with other police officers from Ayivu West Division, Arua Central Business Division, and the Flying Squad Unit to conduct an operation following the incident.

In the process of arrest, the team of officers arrested two suspected robbers and recovered seven registration number plates, a helmet, seven tracking devices for stolen motorcycles, a metallic plate, and 2.5 million shillings in cash.

Angucia told this publication that the two suspects are now detained at Ayivu West Division headquarters in Onduparaka, while inquiries are ongoing under Ayivu West Division CRB 117/2023.

It should be noted that motorcycle theft is a common crime in the border towns of West Nile, and they are normally smuggled to be sold in DR Congo through the porous borderline.
