KABALE: Uganda College of Commerce Kabale was temporarily closed Monday for one week after students demanded their allowances.

This came after the students ignored lunch and demanded their allowances from the government which contributed for the arrival of the police to aid on peace.

The acting deputy principal, Mr. Niwagira Benard, told journalists that the college has been temporarily closed in order to calm the situation since students wanted to demonstrate.

‘’We shall have an engagement meeting with some of the Kabale district officials like the district education officer and resident district commissioner to see how the allowances will be paid to harness the situation,’’ he said.

Mr. Niwagira disclosed that students were told that once their allowance was wired to the institution account, they would be paid immediately, but they turned a deaf ear.

In addition, he said that the institution’s accounting and finance officer, Mr. Biryomumisho Beniah, is on sick leave, and he is expected to report back to work on April 4, 2023, hoping the students will be paid.

‘’Students have been wanting to meet the institution’s accounting officer over their allowance, and we suspect students would have chased him from the institution due to delayed allowance pay,’’ he said.

Mr. Niwagira said that after the meetings are held, the students will be called back to the college for their studies.
