NTUNGAMO: Seven students of Kyamate Secondary School in Ntungamo District have been remanded today {Friday} over murder and arson at the same school.

The seven suspects are alleged to have unlawfully set fire to the school dormitory on February 26, 2023, which destroyed property worth millions and killed a student identified as Bonus Atukwase.

They were charged with 180 cases for all that they accepted. Tumushabe Wilber was pointed out as the prime suspect, who was earlier suspended from school over indiscipline. Other suspects are Kanyesigye Odongo Odamal, Arinatwe Anthony, Tumwesigye Arnold, Arinaitwe Eliajah, Asiimwe Joshua, Tumushabe Wilber, and Twesigye Lawrence, all senior three students.

According to Ntungamo Grade One Magistrate Namubiru Mariam, all the suspects were remanded to Ntungamo Prisons till March 27, 2023, apart from one juvenile, Arinaitwe Eliajah, who was remanded to Kabale Remand Home.

Namubiru said that Ntungamo court is going to hear all 180 cases apart from one count of murder, which is beyond grade one court.

The Rwizi Region Police Spokesperson, Samson Kasasira, said recently that police picked up the suspects after they were named by their colleagues.

According to Kasasira, students are suspected of collaborating with others to deliver the gasoline that was used to torch the dormitories, claiming the live of 13-year-old Bonus Atukwatse and three others, including Marvin Nuwenyesiga, Isaiah Ajjuna, and Lisbon Amanya, who are nursing injuries.

The Sunday night fire that gutted Nyerere and Mandela dormitories reduced the students’ property to ashes. The two dormitories were home to 146 seniors.
