KABALE: The Commissioner for ICT in the Ministry of Information, Communication, Technology, and National Guidance, Mr. Silas Ngabirano, hailed Kabale University for being very instrumental in making innovations that are important in solving rural problems.
He said this while officiating at the Western Regional ICT Innovation Hub’s official launch at Kabale university at Kikungiri Hill in Kabale municipality, where he represented the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi.
Mr. Ngabirano noted that the government will continue to support the regional hub to support innovators in the western region and find technological solutions to problems in rural communities.
He also encouraged entrepreneurs in the Western region to tap into this hub and create new ideas that would solve local problems on an intelligent and adequate basis.
Mr. Ngabirano further saluted the students of KAB, who have produced a number of innovations, and called for their continued development.
“I have seen great innovations made by your students today. As a ministry, we encourage you to improve these innovations and have them commercialized. Kabale University is strategically positioned to be a leading innovator in this region”, he added.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Joy Kwesiga, asked female students to equally participate in innovations as the male students. She further commended the Ministry of ICT and UNDP for supporting the development of the regional hub.
Prof. Kwesiga noted that the Hub was committed to performing activities that benefit the community in which the university operates.
According to Assoc. Prof. Phelix Businge, the Regional Innovation Hub has conducted several activities, including the ICT boot camp, in which volunteers and security officers were trained in computers, and the Intellectual Property Rights program, which was aimed at sensitizing students and staff on the need for intellectual property rights.
The LC 5 Chairperson, Rubanda District, Hon. Steven Kasyaba promised to work together with the university to see various solutions and changes. He further asked the university to seek ways to partner with Rubanda District to grow the faculty of tourism and environmental sciences.
