KASANGATI: Police in Kasangati have taken into custody a 25-year-old woman for allegedly dumping her newborn baby in a pit latrine.

The suspect, identified as Namulemba Winnie, a shop attendant in Kabaga Kayanga Kasangati town council, allegedly dumped the baby shortly after giving birth.

The incident happened on April 11, 2023, in the above area.

Ms. Bulyaba Belinda, Namulemba’s boss, told police that she noticed bloodstains in her employee’s room, and when asked about the stains, Namulemba remained quiet, prompting her to take her to Jojo Clinic.

“It was there that Namulemba claimed that the baby had accidentally fallen into the pit latrine while she was using it,” she further told the police.

Ms. Belinda asserted that upon returning home, she heard a baby crying in the pit latrine while trying to clean it; this prompted her to report the matter to Kiteezi Police Station.

The Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed that Namuleba was arrested and is being detained at Kiteezi Police Station on charges of attempted murder.

Owoyesigyire said that the police, together with the Fire Prevention and Rescue Services, visited the scene and rescued the baby girl alive from the pit latrine.

“The baby was taken to Hands of Love Medical Center for treatment and later referred to Mulago Hospital for better management,” he said.

The police officer asserted that they have recorded statements from witnesses and have opened inquiries into the attempted murder of the baby against her mother, Winnie Namulemba.
